The successful candidate will be expected to meet retention, promotion, and tenure standards for tenure-track library faculty in three areas: (1) professional assignment; (2) research, scholarly, or creative contributions; and (3) university and/or community service. The library provides support for and fosters intellectual endeavors. Librarians are valued as faculty with their own varied research interests which may not be limited to library science.

Applicants selected for in-person interviews will be reimbursed for any travel expenses they incur. Should the successful candidate need to relocate, moving expenses may be reimbursed.

Typical Activities

  • Foster library partnerships with a variety of campus groups that support student retention and success, such as Orientation and First Year Experience, and faculty groups that promote teaching and research, such as the Faculty Center for Excellence
  • Coordinate library representation at various orientation events (freshmen, transfer students, graduate students, international students, new faculty)
  • Working closely with the Instruction librarian, help develop and promote peer-led engagement services such as the Library Ambassadors program
  • Working closely with the library’s Special Collections & University Archives, strengthen outreach to the local community, both to increase awareness of our existing local history collections and to help develop new opportunities for preserving content
  • Develop content for library web pages, manage social media accounts, and design other appropriate online or print materials to assist with promotion of library services or resources
  • Collaborate with internal library units to help promote special events or new services, as needed
  • Participate in duties shared among the librarians: Reference services, including research appointments; library instruction sessions; collection development duties within their assigned subject area
  • Engage in activities related to retention, promotion, and tenure
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required. Some attendance at offsite events, or at our satellite campus in Palm Desert, may also be required.



  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • Coursework, robust knowledge of, or experience in outreach and engagement activities.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Evidence of potential for a successful career in librarianship at an academic library that supports a diverse campus community.


  • Experience with instruction and reference services in a diverse academic setting
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively manage social media and other online promotional tools
  • Familiarity with outcomes assessment in higher education
