As a Principal Data Scientist, you will be a technical leader who plans, manages, and executes a data product roadmap that brings value to Chegg. You will guide teams on large projects, plan, and delegate work to maximize impact, and guide projects to success. You will collaborate and communicate with stakeholders including Engineers, Product Managers, and Business leaders to define strategy and deliver value to Chegg and learners. Your leadership will guide the team to build technology that understands and optimizes educational content and leverages heterogeneous datasets of expert answers, study guides, flashcards, essays, and citations.


  • Develop machine learning solutions across various fields including Recommendations, Natural Language Processing, and Search
  • Distill informal business requirements into problem definitions, dealing with ambiguity and competing objectives. Define and identify success
  • Lead team members on complex projects through careful planning, delegation, and mentorship
  • Identify and prioritize projects that push us forward on company goals. Own personal roadmap, including creation and execution of cross-Chegg high-impact projects.
  • Identify key evaluation metrics and release requirements for data products
  • Keep up with the current state of the art in the fields of personalized recommendations, deep learning, and AI.
  • Design annotation and evaluation tasks for data science products, crowdsourcing
  • Handle multiple concurrent projects while working independently and collaboratively with other data science teams and product teams
  • Innovate, share, and educate both team members and the Chegg community


  • 7+ years of practical experience applying science to solve complex business problems
  • Expertise in machine learning, deep learning for natural language processing or recommendation systems
  • Solid programming skills and good experience in deep learning frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow.
  • Experience with deploying real-time prediction services in production.
  • Superior verbal and written communication and presentation skills, ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts.
  • Ph.D. in computer science or related fields with a focus on machine learning and AI is a plus
