The School of Information at the University of Arizona has once again earned a place alongside the world’s top academic research programs for library and information science. The iSchool’s Master of Arts in Library and Information Science is ranked No. 9 in the U.S. and No. 10 globally in library and information science in ShanghaiRanking’s 2023 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The MLIS rose 18 spots in the most recent rankings, released in late October.

“Our impressive rise in these important rankings is just one indication of the innovative research and teaching of our faculty, as well as the caliber of the MLIS curriculum,” says iSchool Dean Catherine Brooks. “For more than half a century, the UArizona Library and Information Science program has prepared students for leading careers in libraries, museums, archives, nonprofits, government and business. The rankings illustrate our continued success.”

The UArizona MA in Library and Information Science is the only program accredited by the American Library Association in Arizona. The flexible, forward-looking degree, offered on campus and online, offers several concentration areas that recognize the dynamic nature of an evolving profession, including Academic Librarianship, Archives and Special Collections, Digital Curation, Law Librarianship and Legal Information, Health Science Librarianship and Health Informatics, and Public Librarianship.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects scores more than 5,000 global universities across 55 subjects in five categories (natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences) based on the number of papers authored by an institution in an academic subject area, the number of papers published in top journals, the amount of international collaboration and the total number of staff members who have won significant awards. More than 1,900 universities across 104 countries are included in the final ranking.
