What do you find most rewarding about your job as an advisor?

What I find most rewarding about my job is when a student arrives at their appointment unsure of what their next steps should be and leaves feeling confident after working together to create achievable goals, a timeline and a plan. It’s wonderful to meet with them throughout the semester, learn about their progress and provide guidance to help them on their way.

Can you share a favorite story about working with a student?

One of my favorite stories about working with a student is about a student who had to leave UArizona because of low academic performance and returned through our Back2UA program. She was overwhelmed and a little scared coming into our first appointment, but through our work together, over time she created small, achievable goals to become an “A” student. She found a paid internship with a great local company, and participated in our Barcelona study abroad program. She was offered a position with the company she had interned for after graduation, but by then she had offers from a few other companies and was able to choose the one that was most in alignment with her goals, interests and values. I’m very proud of the progress she made as a student and of her continued success after graduation.

What is your advice for students to find success at the iSchool?

My advice for students to find success in the iSchool is to be curious and to learn about yourself, your strengths and your interests. Ask questions, try new things, set goals and build relationships. We are here to help students achieve their academic goals and encourage them to work on their professional development while they are still students. This is the perfect environment to explore interests, develop new skills and test ideas. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance—it’s an honor to be able to help students achieve their goals.
