Since 2013, Animation Career Review has ranked more than 150 collegiate programs in game design. For 2024, the University of Arizona’s Bachelor of Science in Game Design and Development (BSGDD) was once again named a top 25 public program, coming in at #24. The UArizona School of Information (iSchool) and its BSGDD were also named the #7 program in the Southwestern U.S., and #1 game design school in Arizona.

The iSchool’s on-campus, STEM-designated BSGDD propels students to the forefront of becoming a top-tier game designer or developer by helping them master cutting-edge game design and development skills while gaining hands-on experience, including game conceptualization, market analysis, technical design and usability. Whether students aim to revolutionize entertainment, transform educational methods, innovate in training or pioneer new applications in healthcare, the BSGDD positions them to excel in a wide variety of in-demand careers.

“Game development is world building,” says Diana Daly, associate dean for undergraduate academic affairs and student success. “In our Game Design and Development program, students join a creative community, building transformative worlds together based on their skills and imagination.”

Students interested in a less technical degree may study the vast landscape of game design and its social implications in the Bachelor of Arts in Games and Behavior (BA GB). Not just about gaming, the BA GB delves into the profound impact of gamification on society. Students immerse themselves in the fundamentals of multimedia, storytelling and sound technologies, unlocking new realms of creativity without the need for an extensive knowledge in computer programming.

The Animation Career Review game design school rankings are based on surveys, LinkedIn employment data, U.S. Department of Education data and collegiate websites. Their criteria include academic reputation, employment data, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program, value as it relates to tuition and indebtedness, graduation rate and retention rate.

“To be recognized again as a top public school for game design is a distinction that carries both honor and significant responsibility,” says iSchool Dean Catherine Brooks. “We accept the good challenge of providing the best possible education for students seeking a transformative experience in their game design and development and games and behavior degrees.”
