Assistant Librarian (Open Science Librarian)

The Utah State University Libraries seeks a collaborative, innovative and user-centered candidate for the position of Open Science Librarian to join a team supporting our communities in discovering, creating, and sharing knowledge. Working with a team of librarians, the Open Science Librarian engages with students and faculty to support emerging open science and scholarly communication initiatives in all fields. This position also contributes to the Libraries' scholarly communications team by developing skills and expertise with copyright.

 

We view open research as a vital component of USU’s land-and space-grant mission and the university’s continued success as a Carnegie R1 Research Institution. The Open Science Librarian will be a critical position to the libraries’ strategic growth and help envision exciting new initiatives at USU Libraries.

 

Reporting to a unit head within the Researcher Services and Open Scholarship section, the position is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment. Support and mentorship are built into the tenure process. The estimated start date for the position is Summer 2024. Early career librarians are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

• Actively engage with faculty, students, and staff in assigned STEM subject areas, developing strong working relationships and partnerships.
• Provide research services through consultations and instruction as part of a team.
• Develop an understanding of research and teaching needs of assigned areas.
• Develop initiatives to promote and support open science literacy and the values of equity, openness, and privacy.
• Help to foster and sustain communities of practice centered around open data, open protocols, reproducibility, and other topics relevant to STEM researchers.
• Develop expertise in order to help support copyright needs of faculty and students.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• ALA-accredited MLS, or international equivalent by August 2024 
• Knowledge of or interest in the challenges and opportunities surrounding open science, scholarly publishing, and communication in STEM fields
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Commitment to responding flexibly and effectively to the shifting needs and priorities of the Libraries and Libraries’ constituents

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in academic libraries
• Experience supporting open initiatives
• Experience with instruction, including classroom, online or one-on-one
